The Your First 1K Ultimate Guide to Digital Products

If you’ve created templates for yourself to use, why not package those up and sell them to others who don’t have the skills or time to create their own?

A design template can be as simple as a collection of photoshop files, images that can be customized to be used on a website, or even pre-designed Instagram or Pinterest graphics.

You can even create and sell your own stock photos that people can use on their websites or on social media!

These digital products can be Photoshop templates, Canva templates, icons, pre-designed logo templates you create as PNGs, etc!

Depending on what you sell, I’ve seen and purchased design templates for anywhere from $5 - $100 for a bundle of graphics.

I’ve bought icons, stock photos, Photoshop files, blog post graphics templates, you name it!

People who aren’t very design-savvy are looking for unique, stylish design templates for just about everything!

How long does it take to create design templates?

It depends on what you’re creating and your skill level.

If you’re creating a collection of badges, that might take you a few hours.

If you’re creating a set of 20 Pinterest image templates, that might take you a day.

Overall, a design template doesn’t have to be huge and can take as little or as long as you need.

Think about if you have anything you’ve already created that can be made into a template you can sell.

  • Are you already using your own Pinterest template that people compliment you on?

  • Are you already designing icons for your website?

  • Are you already creating something that others could use?

If you have something to go from, it won’t take long to create a design or graphic template that you can sell!

What tools do I need to sell my own design templates and what will it cost?

This is one of the simplest digital products to create and sell, as long as you’ve got the eye for design!

Creating the design template:

You use the platform you’re creating the template in! This can be Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Canva - it’s up to you how your templates will be customized and made available.

If you’re selling icons or other PNG’s, just create and save them in a .zip file!

Delivering the design template digital product:

The beauty of a folder of PNG icons, a Photoshop file, or other design template is that they are so easy to deliver!

All you need is a system that accepts payment and automatically sends the downloadable file to the customer (this can be a .zip file).

Samcart would be the best option for this type of product.

Someone will purchase your product through a Samcart checkout process, and then Samcart will automatically deliver the file, just like if they were buying a PDF or other download.

With the Samcart Basic plan, you can get started selling your own digital design downloads for less than $20/month.

It’s also a good rule of thumb to have your customers automatically tagged with their purchases in your email provider (like Convertkit).

Samcart makes it easy because they integrate natively with most email providers, so you can easily hook it up to add a special “customer” tag to your subscribers who buy! Then you can send them special promos or updates later!

What skills do I need to create and sell digital design templates?

You’ll need to be able to design (or if you’re selling stock photography, take and edit photos)!

You should be able to create simple and easy to understand Photoshop templates. For example, when someone opens the design file to customize the content (let’s say, add their own blog post title to a Pinterest graphic) it should be easy for them to edit and well organized.

If you’re already designing, you don’t really need any additional skills!

You might want to record a quick video of how people can use the templates so nobody gets confused when they buy.

Then you'll just need some super basic skills to set up our payment system and upload your .zip file!

I’ve bought tons of stuff from Creative Market - kinda obsessed :)

Browse around their site and see what pops out to you as “hey, I could make something like that!”.

(I was poking around for Pinterest graphic templates a few months ago and felt like there was a huge opportunity for more of those to be sold on there!)

And once you have your digital product design template for sale on your own site, you can look into selling them as downloads on Creative Market, Etsy, and other places to tap into that huge user base of traffic!

Digital Products For Designers: The Downloadable Graphic Template

Here’s the thing: there are tons of non-designer people out there looking for amazing, unique stock photos, blog graphics, icons, mockups, and more. (Ahem - me!).

We’re not all graphic-savvy, and there is a huge opportunity if you are visually creative to sell your templates and creations!

This is a great passive income product with a lot of potential to be sold not only on your own site, but on these bigger marketplaces as well!
