The Your First 1K Ultimate Guide to Digital Products

“Printables” and downloadable planners and workbooks have been an amazing passive income product for many of my friends making a living online.

It’s one of those digital products that can be so simple to make, so easy to sell for an affordable price, and just make sales on autopilot without much promotion once it’s set up.

Content-wise, a printable can be as small as a single page, or as much as a 100-page PDF that someone prints out and puts in their own binder to use.

If you’re wondering what is a downloadable workbook, planner or printable, it’s just a simple digital file (like a PDF) that someone can download and either print out and fill in or even just use digitally.

One example might be a printable 20-page workbook that helps you outline your book proposal, with tips for filling in each section.

Another might be a printable shopping list that can be hung on the fridge.

Or a weekly planner that you can print out and fill in then hang on your whiteboard for reference all week!

The best thing about this specific type of product is that it’s usually based on something that the creator is already using in their own life!

You might already be sitting on a printable or digital downloadable workbook or planner that you use for yourself but have never thought about designing it and making it for sale!

Printables can sell for anything from $7 to $67 or more depending on the content and what it is!

How long does it take to make a downloadable workbook, or printable?

Gemma Blog Planner

This really depends on the type of digital download you create.

A 5-page printable might take only an hour to make  - and then you can sell unlimited copies forever!

A 50-page workbook with lots of writing prompts and more information might take longer to make, up to 5-8 hours to create the content and design it.

It depends on your own experience too. If you can design it yourself, great! If not, you might need to take some time to learn a simple design program like Canva.

To the right you can see an example of a planner and printable made by our student Gemma!

I love this example because it's something super affordable and you print it out at home.

I love how she's really showing off what it looks like once you print it out and start using it! It's delivered as a simple PDF file, then the customer can take to be printed and put it in their own binder.

If you're thinking about publishing some kind of printable, consider starting by just offering the digital PDF version!

You can see the Gemma's planner and purchase it here!

What equipment do I need to create and deliver the product (and how much will it cost)?

Creating a digital download or printable/planner is simple to create and deliver. All you need is to make a PDF and have a way to automatically collect payment and deliver the download.

Design the PDF:

You can create your PDF in Pages (for Mac) or Canva.

If you’ve got design skills, you could create your printables in Photoshop, InDesign, or Illustrator.

Processing payments and delivering the PDF:

We use and recommend Samcart for this.

Samcart automatically delivers PDF’s to your customers when someone buys. You don’t even need a third party system to deliver it! It’s all built in.

We also love it because it hooks up directly with tons of email services (including ConvertKit, which we use). When someone buys the printable or download, you can automatically tag them as a customer in Convertkit.

This is a super affordable product to create since it would only cost you about $19 to get started with the Samcart Basic option!

What are the skills are required to create a digital planner, download, or printable?

You’ll need to be able to create the content for the workbook, printable, or planner.

Then you’ll need to be able to design it, but you don’t have to be a professional designer to make something nice-looking on your own!

This is a pretty easy thing to create! On a scale from 1-10, I’d say it’s about a 3. It’s a great product for beginners because it’s simple (and cheap!) to create and deliver!

Let’s look at some awesome examples of these kind of printable downloads from some of our students!

Abby Planner Pages

Abby Lawson: “The Intentional Life Planner”, “Simplify” Printables

I am such a big fan of Abby and her blog! She sells some great digital products, and her Intentional Life Planner and other printables are one example.

You can see the planner bundle right here on her site:

It’s a 170-page PDF (digital) that you can print out at home and then put into your favorite binder!

It’s a great way to create a somewhat “physical” product (since people print the PDF themselves at home) but you are delivering a digital download!

Kelsey Baldwin: “Garden Planning Kit” and Other Printables

Kelsey is a Your First 1K® student (and totally crushed it launching her first course with Your First 1K® strategies!) who makes the cutest, most practical printables!

She is a designer and has used her skills to create amazing looking printables for everything from gardening, to baby keepsakes, to moving house and meal planning.

Her printables sell for $7 for individual kits up to $56 for a bundle of themed printables.

You may already have a to-do list or organization system you’ve designed for yourself to use at home, why not put it up for sale?
